About Us
The Eastside Church of Christ was established in 1956. It was supported and sponsored by the East Dallas Church of Christ in Dallas, Texas. In 1955, Bro. R. B. Thurman and the East Dallas congregation had a desire to spread the Gospel. They came to Forney, Texas to hold a meeting near the home of Zach Booth. During this meeting, Zach Booth obeyed the Gospel.
Many brothers from the East Dallas congregation drove to Forney to pick up Bro. Booth to attend service in Dallas. Eventually, brothers such as Fredrick Zeno, Bro. Bradshaw, Bro. Smith, and Bro. Earnest Day, Sr., would hold services at the home of Bro. Zach Booth.
During the year of 1956, Bro. Elbert Moore came to Forney from Kaufman, Texas and under his ministry, the church grew from 5 to 25. During this time, they moved from Bro. Booth’s home to worship in the Masonic Lodge building. With the help of the East Dallas and Hawn Freeway congregations, the Forney Church purchased land from the Railroad Company for $200.00 in the same year. They erected a building to hold services and the Church in Forney became known as the Eastside Church of Christ. The building was erected in the later part of 1956. Visitors from the city would come and worship from time to time. After Bro. Albert Moore moved to Garland, Texas, Bro. Bennett Garrett came to Forney to begin his ministry and the Lord added to the numbers.
In 1959, the church was without a preacher. During that time, Bro. Zach Booth would conduct services, even when it was just himself. Citizens of Forney would say they could hear Bro. Booth singing, praying, and preaching the Gospel. Bro. Raymond Phillips would come to Forney from Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, Texas, to conduct services for Eastside. Bro. Ben Foster also came to Eastside from Southwestern Christian College. The Lord added to the numbers and Eastside was encouraged though their efforts. There was another span when Eastside was without a preacher and the Lord sent Bro. Hubert Burnley in 1970.
Bro. Burnley, his wife Ozella, and their daughter Ozella, came from Amarillo, Texas to serve the congregation. Bro. Burnley’s profession was a builder. He built and remodeled homes. He built the parsonage next to the church building, where he and his family lived. Under his ministry the church grew. The building became too small, so he added an addition to enlarge it. Bro. Will Garrett, an elder from the East Dallas congregation, came to Forney each evening to assist Bro. Burnley in completing the building renovation. Bro. Burnley labored with Eastside faithfully until his death on July 4, 1986. After Bro. Burnley’s passing, Bro. Willard Johnson held the church together.
The East Dallas Church was still supporting Eastside at that time, and their leadership sent Bro. Chauncey Spencer to serve as the minister, along with his wife Tanya. Bro. Spencer’s leadership and teaching led many to Christ and the church continued to grow. During his ministry, the old building was torn down and a new building was erected in its place. In the interim of the construction of our new building, Eastside held its services at the Forney Church of Christ, on the West side of the city. Eastside’s services would begin at 12 noon followed by a shared meal. This was done every week and evening services would be combined with the Forney Church. On the 2nd Sunday in February 1992, Eastside left the Forney Church of Christ and moved into our new building.
During this time, the leadership of East Dallas came to Eastside with the deed to the property stating they would no longer be able to support this work. In 5 years, the building was paid off and the church began to look for land to build a bigger edifice and continue our growth. Eastside had a dream, and we outgrew that location. Bro. Spencer and his wife Tanya served the Eastside Church until the early part of 1999. For a few months, Bro. Tilt James and Bro. Larry Boswell served the congregation.
On May 1, 1999, Eastside was blessed with one of its very own, Bro. Thomas O. Fitzgerald, Jr. Bro. Fitzgerald, and his wife Teena, continued the work and Bro. Fitzgerald continues to serve as the minister today. Through Bro. Fitzgerald’s leadership, preaching, and teaching, the congregation has grown both spiritually and numerically. Through the years as the Lord steadily added to the congregation, the parsonage which Bro. Burnley built and lived in, served to hold Children’s Church and classrooms for the youth.
The church was blessed to acquire 13 acres of land and in the year of 2004-2005, major planning was done for future development of our land purchase. Our desire was to erect a new Worship Facility to give God glory and honor. Under Bro. Fitzgerald’s leadership, the Lord blessed Eastside to erect a new edifice and we moved into our new building at 627 S. FM 548 on the 1st Sunday in August of 2010, where we are today.
Thomas O Fitzgerald, JR
Ministering Evangelist
Thomas O. Fitzgerald, Jr. is a native of Indianapolis, Indiana. Thomas began preaching in 1983. His early years were greatly influenced by his preaching father, the late Bro. Thomas O. Fitzgerald, Sr., the late Bro. Daniel Charles Strong, his early minister, the late Bro. G.P. Holt, and the late Lawrence Wooden, his former minister at the Fall Creek Parkway Church of Christ, in Indianapolis, where he grew up.
Thomas is a 1989 graduate of Southwestern Christian College, where he earned his B.S. degree in Biblical Studies.
Thomas loves to sing and preach, and he has conducted several gospel meetings and musical workshops across the brotherhood, but always recognizes that there’s nothing that can compare to being home with his Eastside Family.
On May 1st, 1999, Thomas answered his calling to the ministry, and became the minister of the Eastside Church of Christ here in Forney, Texas.
Under his ministry, love for the Lord and the people of God, the congregation has been able to experience growth as well as successes. One of the greatest accomplishments under his ministry, was the construction and completion of the edifice we now call our home. After many challenges, we were able to have our first worship service at our new location on the first Sunday in August of 2010.
There have been many highs/lows, gains/losses during his ministry with Eastside, but he’s grateful and thankful for the journey, and remains optimistic regarding what the future holds for the congregation.
